In 1986, Marlboro brand became the number one consumer packaged product in the world surpassing Coca-Cola. In the entire consumer-goods industry, no other brand name has achieved Marlboro’s success, customer recognition and profitability. The magnitude of Marlboro’s leadership is impressive. Six of the top 10 packings in the industry are Marlboro packings.

The key to success is not only in professional advertising and promotional approach. The producer was always prepared to meet changing consumers’ preferences. As smokers’ interest in low nicotine and tar products continued to rise, Marlboro was gradually diversifying its product range.

Today there are more than 50 Marlboro brand varieties. However the most popular are Marlboro Red, Marlboro Gold, Marlboro Medium or as it is also called Marlboro MX4 and Marlboro Silver. Marlboro Red is a good choice for heavy smokers who have regular nicotine cravings. These cigarettes are quite strong. Marlboro Silver is on the contrary, smooth, stylish cigarettes favored by teenagers and social smokers, because they are less addictive. Marlboro Medium is a good option for heavy smokers who would like to decrease nicotine and tar content.

Marlboro is also known for its sponsorship of motor racing. This started in 1972 with its sponsorship of Formula One teams BRM and Iso Marlboro-Ford. The former took one win at the very wet Monaco Grand Prix. In September 2005, Ferrari signed an extension of their sponsorship arrangement with Marlboro until 2011.
